Hyundai engineers are out testing models for a brand-new generation of the Veloster. The prototypes expose that the redesigned Veloster keeps the fundamental shape of the current model, consisting of the unique three-doors-and-hatch configuration. (There’s a single door on the chauffeur’s side and two on the other).
At first glance, it looks very much like the present model, but closer examination exposes some distinctions. Up front, the hood looks lower, and it tapers down to what appears to be an exaggerated variation of the “cascade grille” Hyundai has carried out on the Elantra GT, and brand-new Sonata. The headlights look slimmer, and there appear to be fewer hectic, “quirky” lines.
Moving backwards, we find the exact same asymmetric door design including one door on the left, and 2 on the right. On the best side, the rear door deal with is still tucked in the corner of the window. The glass location on the right likewise appears a bit bigger thanks to a lower edge that stays lower for longer.
From previous test mules, we know that the revamped Veloster has a somewhat longer wheelbase than the present model, which need to result in more space inside. The brand-new car likewise looks to be much sportier thanks to a lower, more structured profile.
In the powertrain department, the base alternative will likely be a variation of the 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-4 found in the present Veloster Turbo, where it provides 201 horse power. Above this might be a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 being developed by the Hyundai N efficiency division. The engine makes its debut this year in an i30 N model to be offered overseas, and in its tamest setting should provide around 246 hp. While the United States will miss out on the i30 N, there’s a possibility we see a Veloster N instead.
Hyundai will take the covers off its upgraded Veloster in late 2017 or early the following year. Sales won’t start up until 2018, with the car likely arriving as a 2019 model.
